Celebrating Five Years of our podcast and a New Declaration of Interdependence

This month marks five years since the Campfire team launched the Responsibly Different™ podcast, a show created to document our journey toward B Corp certification and spotlight businesses using their influence for good. Over time, it’s grown into something more: a platform for candid conversations about media, marketing, and how strategy can serve both people and the planet.

In our latest Fireside episode, Campfire founder Chris Marine and podcast host Benn Marine (yes, they're brothers) reflect on what this milestone means and why the next chapter is rooted in using media more intentionally to build a healthier, more equitable world.

“We’ve spent years amplifying the stories of purpose-driven brands,” Chris shares. “But in that work, we realized something important: by staying healthy as a business and being intentional with where and how we place media dollars, we ourselves have the power to influence communities and culture—for better or worse.”

That power, and responsibility, is real.

As a former journalist, Chris has seen firsthand how local newsrooms are struggling. Budget cuts, layoffs, and consolidation have left communities without access to reliable local reporting. And yet, the health of our democracy depends on those outlets.

A 2021 Pew Research study found that 75% of Americans trust local news, far more than national outlets. But even as trust remains high, less than 15% of Americans pay for news, according to a 2023 Reuters report. That leaves advertising as the primary revenue stream and that’s where media buyers (like us) have a critical role to play.

“Most people don’t realize the ripple effect of media buying decisions,” Chris notes. “When brands buy ads programmatically, only pennies reach the publisher. But when we go direct, we’re not just placing an ad, we’re sustaining the ecosystem that informs, entertains, and represents our communities.”

That’s not just good business, it’s responsible media strategy.

The episode also explores how Campfire is evolving: from measuring the carbon footprint of campaigns to building tools that make it easier to buy directly from smaller, values-aligned publishers. It’s all part of a bigger vision to use media as a tool for collective care and to support an ecosystem where journalism, creativity, and connection can thrive.

And it’s no coincidence this conversation drops the week of Independence Day.

“When you certify as a B Corp,” Benn reflects, “the last step is signing the Declaration of Interdependence. It’s a recognition that none of us thrive in isolation. Our media systems, our businesses, our communities, we rise and fall together.”

So, as we celebrate five years of Responsibly Different™, we’re also marking a renewed commitment. A kind of re-declaration. To center care in strategy. To invest in the ecosystems we rely on. And to be, always, responsibly different.
